Making a difference: How to make inroads into applying your research

Tuesday 19 June 2012 from 10am, Careers Service – Book here

Course Aim:
Many researchers want to use their research to make a difference to people’s lives. The way to do that is by translating your research from bench to market. This is done through Tech Transfer or using your intellectual property (IP). This seminar is being run is collaboration with ISIS Innovation and Library Services to provide an introduction to intellectual property, standards, tech transfer, patenting and searching free databases for patents. During the lunch there will be an opportunity to speak with the representatives from ISIS Innovation and Library Services.

Course Format – Seminar with lunch provided.

Course Content:

1. Overview of Copyright as it applies to IP – Mike Heaney, Executive Secretary, the Bodleian Libraries
Both protecting your interests in your own work, and not abusing the interests of others, have become much more complex with the development of electronic and multimedia publication. The IP possibilities now extend beyond standard journal publication to Open Access, Creative Commons, Weblearn and iTunesU.

2. Patent information databases and other sources – Ljilja Ristic, Physical Sciences Librarian and subject consultant at RSL

3. Dr Martin Proctor, ISIS Innovation – This will be useful for you if you have ever wondered what intellectual property or a patent really is and how and why intellectual property is protected. This talk will also explain the role of Isis Innovation in the patenting process for Oxford University researchers and support available for this activity. We will also look at examples of patents, the information they give you and how to search for patents using a few freely available online patent databases.

4. Organox – Spinout Company
